CAEE Photography Competition

Winners!

1st Place: Reflections, Emily Pace (16)

2nd Place: Two Roads Diverged, Joe Eichstaedt (8)

3rd Place: Top of the Morning, Leslie McCroddan (3)

Architectural engineers tend to be known as the more artistically inclined engineering major. However, after getting to know more people across the CAEE school, we know this art inclination isn’t just limited to ArchE’s. This year, AEI opened the competition for all of the CAEE department!

Students, faculty, and staff submitted a photo they believe best encompasses either architectural, civil, or environmental engineering throughout Austin, Texas.

Golden Hour

This photo was taken by chance when I found myself on a rooftop bar for a SXSW concert. I noticed how the sunlight peeked through the translucent glass at the top of the Frost Bank Tower and thought it made a stunning image and perfect opportunity to enter into the competition.

Two Roads Diverged
This photo was taken from the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge facing towards downtown Austin. The Bridge's split as well as the cluster of residential high-rises appear to align with one another as the sun sets over the city.

Rising High Rises

This is a view of the power plant against Austin's growing skyscrapers, including it's newest and tallest addition: The Independent. Movement up the photo represents the advancement of engineering technology (from the natural environment on the bottom, to the re-purposed power plant, to the towering skyscrapers). The photo captures our desire to build upward, the taller structures almost blending into the blue sky behind them.

Taken with color film.

Evening Rush on the Pennybacker Bridge

The nexus of civil, architectural, and environmental engineering is difficult to describe and even more difficult to find in everyday life. Yet look no further than the Pennybacker Bridge, which carries the Capital of Texas Highway across Lake Austin to capture all three. An iconic landmark representing our city, the Pennybacker carries a scenic, yet heavily used roadway through weathering steel arches as it traverses the rolling Texas Hill Country. The bridge is not only a dazzling feat of Austin architectural engineering, but also forms a critical link in our city's congested roadway network - one which civil engineers strive to improve on a daily basis. In doing so, they face the challenges that arise from our natural barriers such as Lake Austin and other lakes on the Colorado River. These lakes result from essential environmental engineering projects, which not only protect our environment, but improve life for all those that call our city home.

27

Facade

This photograph aims to highlight a variety of unique elements on the eastern face of the Central Austin Public Library. Located at the intersection of the Colorado River and Shoal Creek, this structure serves as a corridor between Shoal Beach Park and Lady Bird Lake by combining a New Formalist architectural style (dominant features being Lueders limestone and perforated corrugated aluminum panels) with a remarkable terraced urban landscape. Additional features such as the photovoltaic roof, water reclamation system, and large windows contribute to the building’s LEED Platinum rating and overall sustainability. All design and material choices work together to create a structure that centralizes social interactions and epitomizes what makes the city of Austin so unique.
